Remember Simon Biles withdrawing from multiple events in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics due to mental health struggles?

Let’s draw a quick contrast with the iconic Olympics of my childhood, the 1984 L.A. Olympics.

Caitlyn Jenner carried the Olympic torch in 1984. Carl Lewis, Evelyn Ashford, and Greg Louganis became stars.

But, thanks to television, there was no question in my 6-year-old mind who the star, the face of America, was in 1984.
