Dear friends and colleagues,
“What’s that?”
“Oh, that’s a hammered brass winged helmet.”
I’d been asking my neighbor Eric about the origins of his business. Not everyone has has a commercial sewing shop upstairs from his wood shop and band rehearsal space, with a view out to the mules.
Eric and his wife started CourierWare something like forever ago (okay, 35 years according to their website) out of their Cambridge Bicycle Couriers shop in Cambridge, Mass.
On a shelf behind his desk, a repurposed vintage supermarket checkout conveyor belt, was this bowl-shaped item.
When he picked it up to show me, I thought, this was what the Philadelphia Eagles helmets should aspire to look like. It required explanation.
