Dear friends and colleagues,
When I first built my off-the-grid house, I didn’t have much choice.
Yes, I wanted a back-to-the-land homestead. I wanted to make our own electricity from solar panels. To live more in natural rhythms. To get away from the main road, a half-mile away to be exact, and the easy hookup to power and landline phone that it offered.
But if we had wanted utility service, it would have doubled our construction budget.
So I built off-the-grid. I’d leave my flip phone perched on the windowsill above the gas range. That was the only place in the house it would get texts, or ring.
